    Hi everyone,
I've got a bunch sitting here. Is there anything interesting I can do with them other than just sell them? Should I turn them into FrankenAlpha kits?
    Thanks

Ideally I'd like to not thrash them. Don't get me wrong, those things are cool, but I'd rather keep the working ones working. Maybe the ones that are ded I can do that with

I still use one for audio recording in a studio.
It can still be used as a fancy typewriter 'cause Office 2008 is compatible with the PPC architecture and the files are in the "modern" format.
Also, there are a few old games that might be working on it.
But FrankenAlphas are good too eh

Doom 3 runs pretty well on my dual core Power Mac G5. You could also use it for things like capturing MiniDV footage.

Lucky you have G5s, I have a G4 and REALLY don't know what to do with it. I kept it to run my old Mac stuff me and a friend did in the 90s, but it's been so long long, I'm scare that nothing runs anymore.

I do play quake on one, actually. I upgraded a QC to have 10 GBs and 3 Nvidia cards (I forgot which card it was)
    You should PM me

I have both of those, but the MDD's PSU is dead. It's also only single core. I'm pretty sure I have the first gen G5. I have several DP2.0s. Just PM me if you want more info

Run some OS 9, maybe? Can't do that with G5 onwards afaik. At least not natively.

Are there any cluster software that'll run on these things? I just really feel like wasting 800W per node

Sure. Pick any PPC Linux distro to install, add openMosix [nvm, that's a dead project - been a while since I last looked into clusters], and presto - you have a solution just waiting for a (parallelizeable) problem.
Making them inefficently mine cryptocurrencies in a non-clustered way would probably be easier to set up though, and give the finger to our environment just as well.

Well I mean a dead project for a dead platform amirite? But seriously, I'll look into it. Other than that, does the PPC970s still hold any absolute advantage over Skylake, or hell, even Sandybridge other than looking sexy af?

A top-of-the-line Quadro FX 4500 for my G5 cost $109, and I'm seven-eighths of the way through Quake 4. I don't know why, but I love gaming on PowerPC.

These are images of Mac game discs that I own. If you want any, give me a shout.

Some of these games are still available for sale. You should probably just point him to Steam or GOG.com.

From a moral standpoint, you're correct of course. But apart from maybe Diablo 2 (-> Bnet), Doom 3 and Quake 4, I'd be kinda surprised if the Mac PPC versions were still easy to come by. GOG, I think, a lot of the time just gives you a WINE wrapped game (meaning: requires a somewhat recent OSX, and on Intel only), and Steam at no point ever ran on PPC, so no download possibility for U! even if a universal binary happens to exist. So unless you just want to retroactively legitimize your peg-legging ways, neither are of much help here.

^ Couldn't have said it better myself. Most of these games cannot run on an Intel-based Mac.

Mine basically takes up space on my bedroom floor next to my chair. I started playing Doom 3 on it a couple months ago, occasionally, just for kicks.
Yes, finding PPC-capable mac versions of games like that is pretty annoying. Allegedly you can convert the Doom 3 demo to a full version using your PC-version files (along with a few other games). There was a website about that... Somewhere... I was going to do that with my PC disc but then lost interest and found a torrent or something to save me the trouble.

I also keep mine around for working in old versions of Logic with my Echo Layla 24/96 audio interface (8-channel rack mount thing, PCI-card based) which works great on that machine.
